How To Throw An Après-ski. Ski Party!

TOAST.Life's Guide to throwing your very own après-ski party at home

As it feels like winter is officially back with all of the recent snow, fun of the winter Winter Olympics in South Korea and with the skiing season underway, TOAST.Life takes a look at how to throw an après ski party of your own – in the comfort of your own home!

In recent weeks the UK has experienced a few flurries of snow and its arrival was rather apt, hot on the heels of this year's Winter Olympics which have gripped the world.

But as much as many of us enjoy a whizz down the slopes on a pair of skies or on a snowboard perhaps, we all know that the real fun waits at the bottom. That’s right people – I am talking about the après ski. Après ski, in case you were wondering, literally means ‘after skiing’ and is defined in the Cambridge Dictionary as ‘social activities that take place in the evening at hotels, bars and restaurants near where people go to ski’. So it’s basically a two-word description for a super fun, Schnapps-filled celebration that follows a day spent enjoying swoosh, swoosh, swooshing through the snow.

What could be better? And whilst there might not be much skiing to be had in this country, that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend and still enjoy all the joys of the après at home – all you need is some thoughtful décor, a few authentic treats and a wooden ski lined with shots. Yes, you read that last bit right.

It is said that après ski is about ‘gemütlichkeit’ - a German word from Austrian après ski culture to describe a place that has hospitality, friendliness, and all-around good cheer, so as the world’s largest winter sporting event unfolds it would simply be rude not to embrace this wonderful concept and celebrate in a suitable, ski-tastic style at home, and here is TOAST’s guide to doing just that!

Daring décor

Located in the heart of London’s West End, sophisticated cocktail bar Archer Street boasts a brilliant Après-Ski pop up bar decked out with all the luxuries of a ski lodge, and the aptly-named Piste Bar is a great source of inspiration for creating a fabulous après ski environment at home. Cosy up next to their open fire on fur-lined loungers with a festive cocktail, settle in to a cosy banquette style booth alongside rustic reclaimed rafter boards, quirky mirrors and Alpine-themed props - the venue provides the perfect wintry escape from the cold outside and instantly transports you to the slopes!

Why not add a splash of vintage après ski chic by placing some vintage skis around your venue – The Wooden Bench Hire Company have a great selection, as well as a vast range of long banqueting style wooden tables and benches that are prefect for draping in faux furs and really add to an Alpine Lodge theme. Classic Crockery Event Hire also have some fab vintage skis as well as a selection of other wintry props such as antlers, lanterns and faux fur throws, and of course a great choice of crockery, candelabras, and glassware that can bring your Aprés Ski look together. Their Natural Pinecone Garlands are very pretty too.

Stay with an authentic spirit and opt for Schnapps, Jägermeister or toffee flavoured vodka. Every culture has its own vernacular, and après ski is no exception - raise your glass and say ‘prost!’ instead of ‘cheers!’ to do as the Austrians do.

If you’re looking for a cocktail serving show stopper– then it has to one of Bespoke Barware’s amazing Ski Boot Sharers - with a whopping 3.5 litre capacity this handmade ceramic ski boot can hold enough party juice for between 4-6 of your lucky guests - just give them a straw each and let them dive in!

Snacks From The Slopes

A great post-ski treat is of course a bratwurst - a type of German sausage made from veal, beef or most commonly pork. The name is derived from from brat meaning finely chopped meat, and Wurst meaning sausage in Old High German. You can cook up bratwurst at home and serve in fresh buns with plenty of mustard and authentic German sauces to go with.

The go-to place for a traditional but oh-so trendy sausage fest is the aptly named Herman ze German, who have restaurants in London’s Charing Cross, Fitzrovia and Soho, but with their handy event catering service they can also bring their traditional bratwurst to you, and you can also buy some of Herman’s delicious wurst from any of their London locations to cook up yourself at home.

Other traditional and tempting après ski treats include a multitude of comfort foods ranging from French onion soup and risotto, to macaroni and cheese and the famous fondue! We love this traditional cast iron fondue set from Le Crueset (£185) and this more modern, hammered copper version (£49) from Cookshop Clearance. Both come with 6 forks and are suitable for delicious cheese, meat or chocolate fondue feasts!

For a wintry sweet treat well it has to be a toasted marshmallow, doesn’t it? Thanks to Stylish Entertaining and Events you can hire fire pits (including kindling and fire-lighters!) that are great for toasting your mallows over as well as keeping guests cosy, and they look pretty fab too (see our feature over on TheEDIT).

Alternatively, if you don’t have the outside space then why not let your guests have some fun with a few of The Naked Marshmallow Company’s genius toasting kits? Each neat little box comes complete with two tasty flavours of gourmet marshmallow, a non-toxic gel burner, a set of eight bamboo skewers and a guide on ‘how to toast the perfect marshmallow’ - the handmade gourmet mallows are made in the UK using only ever Fairtrade sugar and no artificial colours or flavours, and their tempting falvours include Vanilla Bean, Candy Floss, Strawberry Cream, Choc Orange and Salted Caramel. The non-toxic, smokeless and odourless gel burner which will burn constantly for two hours and if you pop the lid on it extinguishes the flame and then the Burner can be stored away and re-ignited again at a later date! OR – if you’d rather leave the toasting to the professionals then why not hire the Marshmallowist Cart?!

Skiing Style

But if you’re no Eddie the Eagle and you’d rather invest in something that you might actually wear again, then head over to cool online clothing store BATCH1 and pick up one of their brilliant, après ski-ready t-shirts or jumpers!
