Burns Night Style

TOAST'S Pick of The Best Burns Night treats

Christmas may seem a distant memory, but don’t despair! Burns Night is just around the corner and it’s a wonderful occasion to get together with friends ad family and enjoy a ‘wee dram’ together. Here TOAST.Life takes a look at the best ways of adding some seriously Scottish style to proceedings.

The annual whisky-soaked celebration of the life, works and spirit of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns is almost upon us, and thanks to Mr Burn’s love for booze, poetry and general good times and revelry, Burns ‘week’ is great time to get together with friends and toast the great man.

Burns Night itself is on the 25th January this year, and Burns week is from 21st until the 27th, so whenever and however you choose to celebrate it, here are TOAST’s pick of the best ways to add just a splash of Scottish style to your Burns Night bash.

Flower Power

Although there is no official tradition surrounding floral displays for Burns Night, the Robert Burns himself did refer to flowers quite often in his poems and so we can turn to these for inspiration. Thistles, heather and daisies all work well and red roses are a must, paying reference to Burns’ classic 1794 poem ‘Red Red Rose’. Appleyard Flowers’ Black Diamond bouquet contains both red roses and thistles, or for the dramatic impact of just red roses (which look great against dark tartans) check out Larry Walshe’s Luxurious Red Rose Knot.

Burns Night Band

The Burns supper is often accompanied by a ceilidh - a participatory, high-energy Scottish hoedown. Yes Spotify has plenty of appropriate playlists, but nothing beats a live ceilidh band. Bowreed are a traditional ceilidh band with a fresh, modern sound who have played at birthdays, weddings, parties, pubs and festivals, and plenty of Burns night suppers of course. Whatever the size of your event, a ceilidh gives all your guests a shared experience they’ll be talking about for years to come!

A Wee Dram

Historic Scottish whisky The Glenlivet has designed a special recipe for Burns Nights and it’s a real winter warmer, and will definitely get the party started too! All you’ll need to make their Glenlivet Hot Cider is 35 ml of The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve, 120ml apple cider, 10 ml lemon juice and a teaspoon of caster sugar. Serve warm and garnish with a cinnamon stick and 2 cardamom pods. I think Mr Burns would approve…
