Talking trends, styling and design with wedding and event experts One Stylish Day

Never swayed by passing trends – award-winning design, planning and styling service One Stylish Day are renowned for creating design-led events, rich in stylish detail, personality and understated luxury. TOAST.Life chats to founder and event designer Louise Hughes to hear how she goes about creating a feast for the eyes and gets her top tips for planning the look of your next event

After all the fun and jinx of Christmas, January may seem a little dull, but it’s actually a wonderful time to curl up indoors and start planning a whole new year of stylish soirees, unique events and fun-filled occasions, all providing precious time spent celebrating with friends. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, wedding, hen do or simply ‘just because’ – now is a great time to get planning an unforgettable event to really look forward to, and to start gathering inspiration for how you want it to look and feel.

One boutique event design, planning and styling service well known for their ‘unashamedly design-led’ and genuinely unforgettable events is One Stylish Day, and the company’s founder and professional event designer Louise Hughes is naturally a vast source of seriously stylish inspiration…

For me, style is personal. Trends come and go but style has longevity, and my designs are focused around the individuality of each couple or client, whilst maintaining our underlying ethos that less is always more and attention to the details is fundamental” she explains.

Great style has a beautiful confidence and authenticity. I believe that a stylish event is curated with precision whilst appearing effortless, guests are wowed but in the moment. It’s the ambience, the experience and the memories created

Before launching One Stylish Day in 2016, Louise worked as a fashion buyer for Britain’s busy high street, which is presumably where her unique and intuitive sense of style began to flourish. Despite enjoying the creativity and business element of the role, the corporate lifestyle and endless long haul trips didn’t suit Louse and so she decided to take the plunge and launch her very own creative resource.

I had always been intrigued with the visual elements of event design – I’ve lost hours and hours on Pinterest  and Instagram!” she laughs

Paired with the logistical, organisational side, it pulls together my skill set perfectly. When I saw a gap in The North for a wedding planner with contemporary styling, focusing on style-conscious couples, One Stylish Day was born

One Stylish Day now have bases in both Manchester and London and work with clients across the whole of the UK; Louise and her team pride themselves providing a truly personal and bespoke service in order to create experiences that are modern, detail rich, effortlessly stylish and truly authentic.

My clients tell me that they come to me in the first instance as they are drawn to the design aesthetic of One Stylish Day. Our ideal clients have a heavy focus on the visuals for their event, and view this as an important part of the experience for themselves and for their guests” Louise explains.

Our styling is trend-driven but not ‘trendy’. It is minimal, pared back, elegant and can stand the test of time. Having said that, I am not only a stylist - behind the visuals I ensure that every detail is precisely planned and all eventualities thought through and prepared for

So as well as making your celebration look completely gorgeous, Louise also very conveniently offers a full and very efficient planning service so all you need to worry about is what you’re going to wear, although to be honest with Louise’s eye for style and previous experience in fashion she could probably help with that too.

If we are commissioned for ‘full planning’, we are in from beginning to end. We design, style and co-ordinate the whole celebration from concept to clear down” she explains.

We spend time getting to know our clients and couples - understanding their vision, hopes and priorities so that we can design a day that encapsulates their style and personality, leaving no detail unconsidered. We take care of every final detail from beginning to end and we turn all the plans into reality whilst the client enjoys every moment”

Louise and her crack creative team can create celebrations for all occasions – just last year they designed an seriously cool children's party, styled a location for an unforgettable proposal and designed and created the UK showroom for bridal designer Grace Loves Lace – they are lead by their style. rather than their services.

The foundation of any design is the moodboard and colour palette. We create one for every client at the start of the design process and it encapsulates the overall vision, tones, textures and fabrics,” explains Louise.

I always mockup the design details ahead of the day which is really useful to see the tones and textures together and iron out any tweaks ahead of the event, especially if unique colour combinations or new fabrics and textures are being introduced.

As well as birthdays, bah mitzvahs and everything in between, One Stylish Day has built a reputation as one of the UK’s most desirable wedding stylists and planners, creating genuinely unique, personality-packed weddings for style conscious, free spirited couples who aren’t afraid to break the mould. Louise herself is never one to shy away from leaving tired traditions behind – quite the opposite.

We don’t believe in outdated traditions, tired clichés or overdone details; simply one exceptional day designed with vision and executed with precision. We are not afraid to break away from the expected,” she explains.

Couples are definitely moving away from the traditional formula of the wedding day and I think this is simply because they are questioning the reasoning behind outdated traditions - if they don’t resonate, they are dropped or tweaked to work for the individual couple” she adds.

“Certain traditions are becoming much less common - you rarely see a Bride throwing her bouquet any more, and those giving speeches are much more varied than the traditional Father of the Bride, Groom and Best Man. ‘First looks’ are becoming really popular too, where the couple spend a little time together alone before the ceremony - if I could re-live my wedding day, I would incorporate this one!”

Large scale events and weddings in particular are notoriously stressful to organise (Bridezillas - you know who you are) and so I can’t help but wonder how Louise, who is often responsible for planning, designing and styling someone’s big day, stays calm under such considerable pressure.

Think of the swan... always calm and serene on the surface, but paddling like crazy under the surface!” she laughs.

It’s my role to ensure my clients feel no stress, they are relaxed and have every confidence in me to deliver the day they dreamed of, knowing them so well to be able to second guess last minute decisions on their behalf and leave them to enjoy the excitement” she adds.

I’m really lucky that I get to work with like-minded couples and to form bonds with them that I treasure. I genuinely aspire to be more than their wedding planner and I’m honoured to often be called a trusted friend and an invaluable support. And that magical moment right before guests arrive… the finishing touches are complete, the space looks and feels impeccable and the concept board has come to life before your eyes; perfection. A stylist's dream!

In 2017 One Stylish Day were crowned Best Newcomer at the North West Wedding Industry Awards, further affirming their position as industry leaders when it comes to being masters of beautifully executed weddings and super stylish events.

The awards are voted for by couples I have worked with throughout the last year, so it means such a lot to have won and to know that they had a positive experience working with me and gave such amazing testimonials” enthuses Louise.

And that’s what it all comes down to at the end of the day… if my clients are happy then my work here is done!”.
