Putting The Luxe In To Luxury With Polar Black Events

TOAST chats to leading creative agency Polar Black Events about their unforgettably luxurious and creative immersive events

“There is nothing minimal about 2017” - TOAST chats to founder of Polar Black Events Louisa Preskett Mobbs.

Have you ever wondered who the likes of Dom Pérignon, Fendi, Cartier, Bulgari, Jimmy Choo and more get to organise their uber prestigious parties? Polar Black Events, that’s who.

"It’s such a cliché but the key to making any event feel luxurious is really all about detail” explains Polar Black’s founder Louisa Preskett Mobbs.

"We genuinely care about everything from the tiny parts and details of an event up to the large scale production. If you can execute both of those areas beautiful - it will feel luxe

And with a client list like that, it certainly needs to. Before launching Polar Black, a creative agency specializing in event production, immersive brand experiences and creative design, Louisa worked in live television production - so it’s safe to say that she is no stranger to the demands of working on high-pressure events. After a stint in the Big Apple working with luxury brands and large-scale fashion shows she returned to London to an role in-house at leading global investment bank Goldman Sachs, and it was shortly after this that she spied an opportunity…

We felt there was a need for an events agency that also had in-house experience. A lot of the people we employ will have both agency and in house credentials, which means they can really understand and empathise with a clients’ needs” Louisa explains.

We produce not just creative and production but digital, content and tech. We also see events as part of their wider marketing and PR strategy - we see events very much as part of a bigger picture

Polar Black’s Events are renowned for having the wow factor and an acute attention to stylish detail; they created a recent ‘design journey’ for luxury French Champagne house Veuve Cliquot by using an impressive and effective mixture of colour blocking, designer furniture and props enabling them to transform the venue into the three district eras of design history that covered Baroque, Retro and Contemporary. Another recent project was a five-day activation for similarly luxurious Champagne brand Dom Pérignon called ‘Transformation’ - an extraordinary fifteen minute experience designed to encapsulate the unique history and alchemy behind the creation of Dom Pérignon. VIP guests embarked on a multi-sensory journey through an exploration of sight, sound and taste in a striking 20m long installation which was built in the middle of South Molton Street in the heart of London’s Mayfair – not a simple undertaking by any stretch of the imagination…

You have to be confident in your team and their delivery. Producing events takes a village, from technical, creative and design, logistics and build. You put the very best team together that you can, with the best experience and you will get an excellent result” enthuses Louisa.

It’s a genuine team effort - we take a brief and will sit down with our designers and creative team and go back to basics, brainstorming ideas around a table. No idea is a bad idea, as cheesy at it sounds, some of our best events have come from a mad idea that we adapted and transformed into something really unique

One such ‘mad idea’ was Polar Black’s recent event for diamond jewellers DeBeers which featured ‘glowing’ images projected on the walls, diamonds ‘floating’ over a bed of white hydrangeas in the centre of a gallery space, and a stunning dining room which boasted wild meadow flowers suspended over each table and a lightbox, made from voile with printed meadow silhouettes, to give guests the look and feel of a stunning meadow at sunset whilst they enjoyed a menu designed by Michelin starred chef, Skye Gyngell. Not bad eh?

Everyone on the team genuinely loves what they do and takes pride in the work they produce, which I think you can usually see and will translate into a bespoke approach to each event” Louisa explains proudly.

We find inspiration everywhere! Luxury follows art, so we encourage everyone in the office to go to as many exhibitions as they can. Whether it’s digital art or classic, it’s all relevant. Fashion and trends also inspires a lot of what we do

Another Michelin star chef to have recently experienced the Polar black treatment is Jason Atherton, for a unique event at London’s prestigious Somerset House.

The main brief from the client was to ‘elevate the moment’, so we knew we had to do something completely different!” Louisa explains.

Jason was brilliant and got totally on board with the idea of tasting plates which we placed onto two long bespoke black tables that we fitted with conveyer belts. We had a suspended installation above which picked out keynotes of the champagne and tasting plates that were being served, from candied apples to coffee beans and beautiful flowers too

So it seems that Polar Black’s highlights have been varied, what about the most unusual request…?

Probably filling a swimming pool with male models dressed as swans!” Louisa laughs.

And her dream project? The Oscars, she tells me.

It is glaringly obvious just from hearing about Polar Black’s work that Louisa and her team take great pride in what they do, but with such high standards comes serious pressure too, and I wonder how Louisa manages to keep her cool when she is delivering events for some of the world’s most recognizable brands, as well as high profile guests such as Naomi Campbell, Lewis Hamilton, and Alexa Chung to name just a few, and not forgetting a selection of European Royals and various influential socialites too…

Ultimately there are always curve balls thrown at you in events, but there are always solutions” she explains.

I am able to also rationalise situations, and there are always ways of making things happen. It’s remaining calm and finding those solutions quickly that our team are brilliant at

The summer months sees Polar Black bringing their unique style of memorable and luxurious events to occasions such as the Gold Cup VIP area for Veuve Clicquot at the Polo, and creating the annual Instagram sensation ‘Chelsea in Bloom’, in honour of the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show. The winter season is equally busy, but ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ as they say, which is why I am pleased to say that Louisa, in between planning events for others, also manages to finds time to for entertaining at home too.

I love dinner parties! Small, old groups of friends, sitting around a table, chatting and drinking a bottle of wine and laughing until our jaws ache!” she laughs.

And we couldn’t agree more.
