How To Make Your Bonfire Night Go Off With A Bang!

TOAST's guide to creating an explosive Bonfire Night party for 2017!

Remember, Remember, The Fifth Of November! Whether you call it bonfire night, fireworks night or even Guy Fawkes – it’s definitely a time for a celebration! From cocktails and sparklers to fireworks and feasting, here TOAST takes a look at how to make your bonfire night party go off with a bang this year!

Back on 5 November 1605, a chap called Guy Fawkes was up to no good…

For over 45 years English Catholics had been persecuted by Queen Elizabeth I, so when King James I - a Protestant - took to the throne, they had hoped that they would finally be granted freedom to practice their religion in peace. However, when things didn’t turn out quite the way they had hoped, a group of conspirators resolved to assassinate the King and his ministers by blowing up the Palace of Westminster later known as the Gunpowder Plot…

Led by Warwickshire-born Robert Catesby these conspiritors included an explosives expert from York called Guy (Guido) Fawkes; together they managed to smuggle an impressive 36 barrels of gunpowder into a cellar of the House of Lords which was enough to completely destroy the building. However, their murderous scheme began to unravel when an anonymous letter was sent to the 4th Baron Monteagle William Parker, warning him to avoid the House of Lords. This mysterious tip-off led to a full search of Westminster Palace in the early hours of the 5th of November and Guy Fawkes, who had been left in the cellars to light the fuse, was caught, arrested, sent to the Tower of London and tortured until he gave up the names of his fellow plotters.

To this day we still celebrate the failure of the potentially devastating Gunpowder Plot and the demise of one of Britain’s most infamous villains by burning effigies of the man himself on big bonfires whilst ‘ooo-ing’ and ‘ahhh-ing’ as beautiful fireworks, reminiscent Fawkes’ planned explosives, light up the sky!

So why not join in this colourful tradition by getting a few friends together and enjoying some fireworks fun of your own this year?! Here TOAST takes a look at how to make your bonfire night celebrations go off with a BANG!

Light My Fire

Keep your guests cosy and recreate the magic of a traditional bonfire in your garden with Jam Furniture’s gorgeous Cross Tân Outdoor fire pit - its contemporary, almost sculptural design creates a stylish focal point in any outdoor area. Made in Wales, 5 identical laser cut and folded plates made from high grade thick steel are bolted together to create its unique pentagon profile, and as the fire pit ages its surface will coat with a rich brown rust adding to its striking aesthetic. There’s no assembly required so all you need to do is get the fire started (carefully!) and provide the marshmallows, of course.

Well-considered lighting is integral when throwing any kind of elegant do but it’s even more atmospheric at this time of year, when the evenings are darker but still relatively mild (hopefully). Bonfire Night should be spent outside watching as the sky lights up, so make sure that your outdoor lighting game is on point with Fatboy's gorgeous new Bolleke lamps which can be hung almost anywhere with their convenient loop mechanism. They come in four stylish colours and they are also wireless, rechargeable and an effective way of adding some gorgeous glow to your al fresco soiree.

And Don't Forget the Rhymes...

We all remember the rhyme;

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

Guy Fawkes, guy, t'was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England's overthrow.

By god's mercy he was catch'd
With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.

And what shall we do with him?
Burn him!

Don’t forget to tag @ToastLifeUK in all your Bonfire Night celebrations – we would love to see your photos!
