Stylish Stags and Sophisticated Hens

TOAST’s top picks for adding some style and sophistication to proceedings!

Wedding season is fast approaching and that also means that it’s time for the obligatory stag and hen dos too! If you’re planning someone’s ‘last night of freedom’ then read on for TOAST’s top picks of adding some style and sophistication to proceedings…

It all began with the ‘bachelor party’, which in fact is said to date back as early as the 5th century B.C when the ancient Spartans were the first to make a celebration out of the groom's last night as a single man. The event is known by different names in different countries: in Germany it is called Junggesellenabschied, which literally means ‘farewell to bachelorhood’, it is known as the ‘buck's party’ in Australia, a ‘stag party’ in the U.K., Ireland and Canada and, with typical panache, the ‘Enterrement de vie de Garçon’ in France, which means ‘the burial of the life as a boy’. Cheerful eh?

Although the practice of giving a party to celebrate the bride-to-be also goes back for centuries, the modern day ‘hen’ or ‘bachelorette’ party is likely to have begun during the sexual revolution of the 1960s. Hen parties were uncommon until at least the mid-1980s, and the first book on planning bachelorette parties wasn't published until 1998!

Nowadays, of course, both and hen and stag parties are an integral part of any wedding. Gone are the times of a night at the local pub or nightclub – today’s proceedings usually take place over a weekend at least, and the celebrations are extravagant, imaginative and generally pretty costly too…

In TOAST’s recent Spotlight interview with Matt Mavir, founder of the UK’s leading hen and stag planners aptly named ‘Last Night of Freedom’ – we learnt about their mind boggling packages that range from a day spent baking with a former Great British Bake Off star, to a full a blown expedition to the North Pole! Hens and stags are bigger and better than ever, and the pressure is on to organise something pretty spectacular for the bride or groom.

So if you have been tasked with organising an upcoming stag or hen - Matt also gave TOAST his indispensible do’s and don’ts which you can find over on TheEdit now, and here are TOAST’s top picks of some of the best ways of adding style, sophistication and fun to anyone’s last night of freedom…
