Christmas Stocking Style

TOAST'S Pick of the best Christmas Stockings

December is well and truly here which means it’s almost time for Father Christmas to pay a visit, depending on which list you’re on that is. TOAST explores the history of the traditional Christmas stocking, and takes a look at some of 2016’s most stylish to hang on your fireplace that are guaranteed to delight friends, family and the big man himself.

When you think about it, a Christmas stocking is actually quite a strange concept. You grab your old stocking, you hang it by the fireplace, try to go sleep and hope that you awake to find it filled with presents, and not the dreaded coal. But why a stocking?

The truth is, no one really knows, but legend has it that many moons ago, Bishop Nicholas of Myra heard of the suffering of a local man whose wife had recently died, leaving him and his three daughters behind. The family, who were very poor, used to hang their socks to dry on the hearth, and so when the kind Bishop decided to drop a few gold coins down their chimney in order to lend a helping hand (as you do), the coins landed in their drying socks!

When word spread of this curious and wonderful happening, children (and adults) also began to leave their socks out under the chimney, hoping that they too might receive a treat or two from Saint Nicholas, as the Bishop came to be known, or as we know him today – as Father Christmas.

In 2016 the tradition is still going strong but stockings are a lot more sophisticated (and bigger, thankfully) than an old sock. Here are TOAST’s top stocking picks for 2016, so that you can hang yours out in style.
